Slate privacy policy

Last updated: August 8, 2026.

The Slate app collects no data. None.

No account

There is no sign-up or login.

No tracking in the app

The app contains no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party data collection of any kind. We do not sell, share, or transmit any personal information from it, because we never collect any.

This website

This marketing site runs no analytics scripts, sets no cookies, and loads nothing from third-party servers. Like every website, the server that hosts it keeps ordinary request logs so the pages can be served and kept online. Nothing from the app is ever involved.

The survey

This website hosts an optional survey about how Slate is working for you. It is anonymous by construction: we store only your answers and the time they arrived. We do not store your IP address, device details, or any identifier, and answers cannot be linked to you or to anything in the app. The app itself only opens the survey page; it never knows whether you answered.

Your words stay on the phone

Your voice is recorded on your phone and stays there. Audio never leaves the device, ever. A typed entry is the same: written on the phone, kept on the phone.

Everything runs on the device

Transcription happens on your phone, using Apple’s on-device speech frameworks. Reflections and the weekly review are written on your phone by Apple’s on-device models. Nothing is sent to a server, because there is no server. Turn on airplane mode and everything still works.

Backup is yours, and optional

iCloud backup is optional and off by default. If you turn it on, transcripts and reflections back up to your own private iCloud account (Apple’s CloudKit), encrypted by Apple. We never see, receive, or have access to that data. Audio is never included.

Notifications are local

The daily reminder and the entry-ready notice are local notifications scheduled on your device. They never contain journal content, and nothing is pushed from anywhere, because there is nowhere to push from.

The microphone

The microphone is used only while you are recording an entry, and only to record it.
